Because of their complexity and the fact that these DDoS attacks require more than one cybercriminal to carry them out, they are typically targeted at high-profile web servers, such as bank servers. The goal of the attack itself is to make the machine or network unavailable to its users, and this is accomplished by overloading the server with requests and traffic, thus causing the site to become painfully slow or unavailable.
One of the most recent DDoS attacks targeted Android users, leveraging the Google Play icon.
Here’s how it works:
An Android Trojan sneaks into your mobile device and installs a fake Google Play icon on your phone. Upon opening it, the original and legit application will be launched and you will appear to be operating within the legitimate app. But soon enough, you will begin to notice the performance of your Android isn’t as impressive as it once was. the battery is old, you’ll think, but no, you’re under a DDoS attack. Now that the cybercriminals are in your phone, they may also sign you up for premium numbers such as horoscope text messages, which can cost a pretty penny and it’s hard to identify where the costs are coming from, unless you really study your phone bill.
Attacks on your mobile security are hard to avoid, but you can help protect yourself by only downloading apps from reputable sites (never third party!).
