Halloween is rapidly approaching and it’s looking spooky! Holidays
are prime opportunities for criminals of all kinds. Not only do you need to
keep your children safe while trick-or-treating, but also from online threats
and cyber criminals.
If you’re anything like Winston, you can’t decide what to dress up as and shop around online for your costume. But are you educated on the scams you need to avoid? If not, you better stick to actual Halloween warehouse shops. Fake costume shops are rampant, and you could end up being charged for a costume you’ll never receive, with little chance of a refund. To be sure you’re buying from a reputable site, make sure the payment and/or sign-in section(s) of the site is/are secure – their URLs should start with “https” and have a small lock icon next to it.
Keep an eye out for pop-ups or sites that contain a lot of click-throughs to get to the actual content you are looking for. One such scam has ghoulishly appeared this year promising “free Halloween skeleton templates”. In actuality you’ll be redirected to a page with videos of naked celebrities and you’ll end up with a computer infected with malware.
