In case you didn’t know, October is Cyber
Security Awareness Month in the US and the EU. The goal is to reinforce the
idea that each of us plays an important role in protecting our digital lives.
This year’s theme “Our Shared Responsibility” focuses on the internet as a shared resource and its safety being everyone’s responsibility. We owe it to each other to be educated, and employ more secure measures when sharing content online. Things as simple as learning how to identify spam email and deleting it instead of forwarding on to your friends can make a big difference! Even the U.S. President Obama is getting in on the action! Read his proclamation on cyber security here.
Here at BullGuard, we do our best throughout the year to keep you up to date and in the know on all things cyber security. In honour of Cyber Security Awareness month we’ve created a list of our top ten tips, and links to some of our more detailed blogs for you to read up on and share with your friends.
Our Top Ten Tips:
- 1. Install security software like BullGuard Internet Security, set it to scan on a regular schedule. At night is best so as not to disrupt your daily usage.
- 2. Use strong passwords, and don’t use the same one for all sites. Change them from time to time.
- 3. Only provide your credit card information to sites that use a safe payment method.
- 4. Check your privacy settings on social networking sites on a regular basis to confirm you’re only sharing what you want to share.
- 5. Talk with your children about being safe online and cyberbullying.
- 6. Report inappropriate behaviour or postings online.
- 7. Install security software like BullGuard Mobile Security to protect yourself when banking online from your mobile device or using Wi-Fi Hotspots.
- 8. Always think twice before posting any content online: to post or not to post?
- 9. Never visit a site that you don’t know to be reputable. Adopt safe browsing habits.
- 10. Set all of your software to update automatically, this way you ensure you’re operating with the latest and greatest and bugs shouldn’t be an issue.
Together we can create a safer digital community. Educate your friends and peers and honour Cyber Security Awareness Month!
